Icons and ratings in Wine.com product descriptions
A key to the icons, abbreviations and numbers that appear below the names of wines on Wine.com pages can be seen by clicking on any of these icons. But in brief they indicate the following: The number indicates the rating given to the wine by a wine publication, and the abbreviation to the left of the number indicates which publication gave that rating. The wine glass in a colored square indicates the kind of wine: red, white, bubbly, etc. The gray square with a swirl indicates a screw-cap closure, the blue square with the letter K indicates a kosher product, the green square with a grape bunch indicates an organic product, and the red square with a dollar sign indicates a collectible wine. To learn more about these ratings and what they mean, please visit Wine.com > Wine Basics > Ratings Explained
Learning about wine and choosing the right wines for certain foods
An entire section of the Wine.com site is dedicated to helping customers learn about wine. To get started, please visit Wine.com > Wine Basics Here you can learn about... - how to select a great wine - pairing wine with food (plus dozens of great recipes!) - types of wine and various wine-growing regions - wine tasting and stemware ...and much more!
Price variations and product availability - why price and stock can differ by state
Many states have laws prohibiting retail shipments of alcohol over state lines, and in some states Wine.com must purchase our stock from in-state wholesalers and ship from an in-state warehouse. As a result, we are subject to the pricing and availability of these local wholesalers, which may affect the retail price and search results when placing orders shipped to these states. To be sure of seeing correct pricing and availability when shopping at Wine.com, please be sure to choose your shipping destination from the "select a shipping state" pull-down menu before you begin shopping. If you change your shipping state after you begin shopping, items in your shopping cart may change price or be removed by our system. To learn more about interstate wine shipping laws, please visit http://www.ncsla.org/states.htm
Shipping and handling - prices and rush shipping options
For standard delivery of wine, Wine.com charges a base rate of $9.95 per order, plus $1.25 per bottle. Shipping rates for non-wine items start at $7.99, and vary based on weight and quantity. (Order to AK will include an additional $5.00 charge.) During summer months, wine shipments may be charged slightly higher rates to cover rapid delivery to minimize the chance of heat damage. This additional cost would be reflected in the shopping cart at check out.
In most cases, Wine.com offers three delivery options - Standard, Priority, and Express. The estimated delivery times and costs of these options can vary based on the weight and availability of products. (Quick-selling or rare items may be back-ordered up to a few days.) While under many circumstances we are able to deliver orders within a day or two, at this time Wine.com cannot guarantee overnight delivery. When placing a Wine.com order, all delivery options available for your shipment will appear during the "Confirm Order" step of the checkout process, showing the costs and estimated delivery times for each based on your particular order. (Some states allow only standard ground shipping for alcohol.)
Shipping states - to which states Wine.com can ship wine
We ship non-wine items (gift baskets, gourmet food & chocolate, gift certificates and accessories) to all 50 states. Many states prohibit out-of-state retailers from shipping wine to residents of their state. State laws on wine shipping are complex and under constant review, and we look forward to a day when all states open up to out-of-state retailers so we can offer you all our full assortment of products. In the meantime, we've opened a network of Wine.com warehouses in a number of states, giving us a local presence in those states. This enables us to legally ship wine to our customers in those states while also reducing the shipping time to get you your wine. Unfortunately, in some states not even that will suffice, so keep those letters and emails flowing to your state legislators! If your state has recently passed new laws regarding alcohol shipments, but the state is still listed below under "States where we do not ship wine," the new laws relate to wineries only, not to retailers like Wine.com. You can read more information here. For orders containing wine, below is a list of states we ship to, as well as details on which states do not allow shipments of wine. States where we ship non-wine related products All 50 U.S. states States where we do ship wine1 Alaska California Colorado Connecticut* Florida Idaho Illinois Louisiana Massachusetts Michigan Missouri Nebraska Nevada New Jersey New Mexico New York** North Carolina North Dakota Ohio Oregon Texas*** Virginia Washington Washington D.C. West Virginia Wyoming States where we do not ship wine2 Alabama Arkansas Arizona Delaware Georgia Hawaii Indiana Iowa Kansas Kentucky Maine Maryland Minnesota Mississippi Montana Oklahoma Pennsylvania Rhode Island South Carolina South Dakota Tennessee Utah Vermont Wisconsin States with zip code restrictions on wine shipments3 Alaska Florida Idaho New Hampshire 1 Please be sure you have chosen your Ship To state correctly, as regulations in certain areas of the U.S. prohibit their residents from receiving wine shipments directly. 2 These states are limited to accessories and non-wine Gourmet Food Baskets only. Wine.com does not ship wine to these states due to current legal restrictions. 3 Local laws prevent us from shipping to certain zip codes in these states. Information regarding zip codes that are not currently serviced by Wine.com will appear at the time that orders are placed. * State regulations in Connecticut prohibit wine and food from being shipped in the same package. As such, Wine.com does not offer for sale in these states any gift baskets, clubs or collections that contain both food and wine. ** State regulations in New York prohibit wine and food from being shipped in the same package. Baskets ordered that include both food and wine will be sent in two separate packages. *** Texas state law prohibits us from shipping wines containing more than 16% alcohol.
Shipping states - why Wine.com can't ship everywhere (even under new laws)
Some states do not allow retailers to ship wine over state lines, so if a retailer doesn't have a warehouse in these states, it cannot sell wine to customers in these states. We can, however, ship many other products like gift baskets and gourmet foods to these states, and customers in these states can order gifts of wine for friends and family elsewhere. Recent changes to some state alcohol-shipping laws (made in the wake of a 2005 Supreme Court ruling on interstate wine sales) apply only to direct shipments from wineries, and have no effect on wine retailers like Wine.com. To learn more about wine shipping laws, please visit the following site for links to each state's Alcoholic Beverage Control agency: http://www.ncsla.org/states.htm To see a list of states to which we do and do not ship wine, click here.
Shipping states - why you must choose before shopping
Because wine availability and pricing may vary from state to state due to the way interstate commerce laws influence our buying patterns, Wine.com created this layover welcome screen to prevent confusion. We've learned from experience that customers sometimes browse while "shopping in" a default state, then switch states when they're ready to complete an order, only to discover the wine they want isn't available or is priced differently for that location. We have found that the select-state layover screen, while a little intrusive, almost entirely eliminates the chance of customers being disappointed by the way their order can be affected if they don't choose a shipping state before shopping.
Shipping - Wine.com does not ship outside the U.S.
At this time, Wine.com ships only to addresses within the 50 U.S. states.
Vintage Substitution - policy
On occasion the chosen vintage of a wine will sell out or be replaced by a new release after your order is placed. In such cases, Wine.com will substitute with a comparable vintage. If you would rather be notified if your chosen vintage is unavailable you can select "no" under "vintage substitution" in your shopping cart. Wine.com reserves the right to substitute a comparable vintage on wines under $15.
